How to read 2x faster in 30 days

Practical techniques — chunking, pacing, peripheral vision — to double your reading speed in a month.

Reading speed is a trainable skill, not a talent. Most adults read between 200 and 250 words per minute (WPM). With deliberate practice you can reach 400–500 WPM while keeping comprehension above 70%.

1. Stop subvocalizing Subvocalization is the inner voice pronouncing every word. It caps you around 250 WPM. Train yourself to see the words instead of "hearing" them by chewing gum, humming softly, or counting "1-2-3" mentally while reading.

2. Read in chunks Your eyes move in jumps called saccades. Beginners fixate on every word; fast readers fixate on groups of 3–4 words. Practice with a finger or pen sweeping under each line at a slightly uncomfortable pace.

3. Expand peripheral vision Print a paragraph in three columns. Focus on the middle of each line — your peripheral vision picks up the words on the sides. After two weeks you'll naturally take in more text per fixation.

4. Use a pacer A pen, your finger, or the cursor moving across the line forces your eyes forward and prevents regression (going back to re-read).

5. Measure weekly Use our reading test once a week. Track WPM and comprehension. Aim for a 10% gain per week for the first month, then plateau-busting drills.

Consistency beats intensity. Ten focused minutes per day will outperform a two-hour session once a week.
