10 typing tips that boosted my speed from 40 to 90 WPM

Practical, no-nonsense tweaks that compound over weeks: posture, home row, accuracy first, and rhythm drills.

Fast typing isn't about flying fingers — it's about consistent fingers. Here are the ten things that took me from 40 to 90 WPM in six months.

1. Touch type, no exceptions Cover your keyboard with a cloth for a week if you have to. Looking down resets the muscle-memory loop every time.

2. Home row is non-negotiable ASDF / JKL; — fingers always return here between keystrokes.

3. Accuracy before speed A 90 WPM run with 8 errors equals a 75 WPM clean run. Train at 96%+ accuracy before pushing speed.

4. Warm up Two minutes of slow, deliberate typing of the alphabet primes your fingers.

5. Drill weak keys Identify your worst keys (usually Q, Z, P, ; ) and run targeted drills for two minutes daily.

6. Use proper posture Wrists straight, elbows at 90°, screen at eye level. Wrist pain destroys consistency.

7. Rhythm > bursts Aim for an even cadence — like a metronome. Bursts followed by pauses kill your average WPM.

8. Learn keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+arrow, Ctrl+Backspace and Home/End save real minutes per day.

9. Practice with real content Move from random word drills to articles and code. Your fingers must learn punctuation and numbers too.

10. Measure every week Use our typing test and chart your WPM. Visible progress is the strongest motivator.
